German Chamomile Oil, also called Blue Chamomile Oil, is an essential oil steam distilled from the flower heads of Matricaria chamomilla (also known as Matricaria recutita). It is famous for its deep ink-blue colour and its sweet, herbaceous, hay-like aroma, and it is widely valued in skin care, baby care, cosmetics and aromatherapy.

Arizone International supplies German Chamomile Oil for skin care brands, cosmetic manufacturers, aromatherapy companies and private label businesses.

Why It Is Blue

The fresh chamomile flower does not contain the blue colour. During steam distillation, a compound called matricine breaks down into chamazulene, which is deep blue. The amount of chamazulene affects both the colour and the value of the oil. Over time, and with exposure to air and light, the colour slowly changes from blue to green and then brown.

About the Plant

German chamomile is an annual herb with small daisy-like flowers and a sweet, apple-like smell. It is native to Europe and western Asia and is grown in Egypt, Hungary, Germany, Bulgaria, Nepal and India. In India, it is cultivated in Uttar Pradesh and some other northern states, and the dried flowers are widely used for herbal tea. The oil yield is very low, often well below 1%, which makes the oil costly.

Aroma and Composition

  • ChamazuleneGives the blue colour and is studied for its soothing properties.
  • Alpha-Bisabolol and Bisabolol OxidesMajor components, also studied for skin-calming activity. Their ratio varies by chemotype.
  • Beta-FarneseneAdds to the sweet, herbaceous scent.

Applications

  • Creams, serums and lotions for sensitive or irritated-looking skin
  • Baby care and gentle skin care products
  • After-sun and soothing formulations
  • Aromatherapy blends for calm and relaxation
  • Hair and scalp care
  • Natural perfumes, in small amounts

Traditional Use and Research

Chamomile has been used for centuries in European folk tradition to soothe the skin and to support calm and restful sleep, mostly as a tea. The European Medicines Agency recognises chamomile flower preparations as traditional herbal medicines for certain minor complaints. Laboratory studies have explored chamazulene and bisabolol for anti-inflammatory activity. These are not claims for this specific product.

Safety and Dilution

German chamomile oil is generally mild but should always be diluted before use. People allergic to plants in the daisy family (Asteraceae), such as ragweed or arnica, may react. A patch test is recommended. Chamomile may interact with some medicines, including blood thinners. Not for internal use. Keep out of reach of children.

Quality Parameters

  • Botanical identity (Matricaria chamomilla)
  • Chamazulene and bisabolol content by gas chromatography
  • Colour and aroma evaluation
  • Specific gravity and refractive index
  • Screening for adulteration with synthetic azulene or other oils

Packaging and Storage

Supplied in small aluminium or amber glass bottles. Store tightly closed in a cool, dark place, ideally refrigerated, to protect the blue colour.

Compliance

ISO 22000:2018 GMP FSSAI HACCP

During distillation, matricine in the flowers turns into chamazulene, a deep blue compound. It slowly turns green and brown with age and air.

They come from different plants. German chamomile is blue and herbaceous, while Roman chamomile is pale yellow with a sweet, apple-like scent.

The flowers give very little oil, often well below 1%, so a large harvest is needed for a small amount of oil.
