Grape Seed Oil is a light, pale green to yellow oil pressed from the seeds of grapes, Vitis vinifera. It is a by-product of wine and juice making, and it has become one of the most popular carrier oils in cosmetics and massage because it absorbs quickly and leaves little greasy feeling.

Arizone International supplies Grape Seed Oil in cosmetic and food grades for skincare brands, massage and aromatherapy companies, food businesses, wholesalers and private label manufacturers.

A Waste Product Turned Valuable

After grapes are crushed for wine or juice, what is left is called pomace: skins, stems and seeds. For a long time this was thrown away or used as animal feed. Seeds make up only a small share of the grape and contain around 10% to 20% oil, so large quantities of seed are needed. Pressing or extracting the seeds turns winery waste into a valuable oil. Italy, France, Spain and other wine regions are traditional producers, and India's grape-growing belt around Nashik in Maharashtra also produces grape seed.

Composition

  • Linoleic AcidVery high, typically around 65% to 75%, one of the highest of any common oil.
  • Oleic AcidUsually around 15% to 20%.
  • Vitamin EEspecially tocotrienols, which help protect the oil.
  • PolyphenolsSmall amounts in cold-pressed oil, much less than in grape seed extract.

Why Formulators Like It

Oils rich in linoleic acid tend to feel light and absorb well. Grape seed oil is often chosen for facial oils, serums and products for oily or combination skin because it rarely feels heavy. It is also a favourite massage oil because it glides well but does not leave the skin slippery for long. Its mild scent makes it an excellent base for essential oil blends.

Applications

  • Facial oils, serums and lightweight moisturisers
  • Massage and aromatherapy carrier oil
  • Hair serums and scalp oils
  • Lip balms, body oils and after-shave products
  • Salad dressings and cooking (food grade)
  • Private label cosmetic oil ranges

Cold-Pressed or Refined?

Cold-pressed grape seed oil is greener and keeps more natural compounds but is produced in smaller volumes and at higher cost. Refined grape seed oil, often solvent-extracted and then refined, is paler, neutral in odour and more economical, and is widely used in cosmetics and food. We supply both and can advise on the best choice.

Quality Parameters

  • Fatty acid profile by gas chromatography
  • Acid value and peroxide value
  • Iodine value and saponification value
  • Colour, odour and clarity
  • Residual solvents for refined grades, and heavy metals
  • Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) testing where required

Storage

Because it is high in polyunsaturated fat, grape seed oil should be kept in closed, light-proof containers in a cool place and used within its shelf life. Adding vitamin E can extend stability in finished products.
