Valerian Root Extract
Part of our Herbal Extracts range, manufactured and exported by Arizone International LLP.
Valerian Root Extract is a concentrated powder made from the roots and rhizomes of Valeriana officinalis, a tall flowering herb native to Europe and Asia. It is standardised to valerenic acids and is one of the best-known herbal ingredients for sleep and relaxation products.
Arizone International supplies Valerian Root Extract to supplement brands, herbal medicine makers, tea companies and private label businesses.
About Valerian
Valeriana officinalis grows in damp meadows and woodlands across Europe and parts of Asia, and it is cultivated mainly in Europe (the Netherlands, Belgium, Germany and Eastern Europe) and China. It has clusters of small, sweet-smelling pink or white flowers, but its dried roots have a strong, earthy smell that many people find unpleasant, caused by isovaleric acid. Valerian has been used since ancient Greece and Rome, and it is still one of the most popular herbal sleep aids in Europe. In India, a related species, Valeriana jatamansi (tagar), grows in the Himalayas and is used in Ayurveda.
How Valerian Root Extract Is Made
Dried roots are extracted with water-ethanol. The extract is concentrated at low temperature and dried into a light brown powder with the characteristic valerian smell. Gentle processing helps protect the valerenic acids and volatile compounds.
