Silymarin Extract Powder is made from the seeds of milk thistle, Silybum marianum. Silymarin is the best-known active group in milk thistle, and it is one of the most widely used ingredients in liver wellness supplements around the world.

Arizone International supplies Silymarin Extract Powder for nutraceutical, herbal, cosmetic and food manufacturers, private label brands, wholesalers and bulk buyers. Standardisation, extract ratio, carrier, packaging and quantity can all be set to your specification.

What Is

Milk thistle is a tall, spiny plant with purple flowers and white-veined leaves. It is native to the Mediterranean and is now grown in Europe, China and parts of India. The small, hard seeds are defatted and extracted to produce silymarin.

Silymarin is a mixture of flavonolignans, mainly silybin, isosilybin, silychristin and silydianin. Extracts are commonly standardised to 70% to 80% silymarin by UV, or to silybin content by HPLC.

To make the extract, the dried plant material is cleaned, milled and extracted with water, hydro-alcohol or another suitable solvent. The liquid extract is filtered, concentrated and usually spray-dried into a fine, free-flowing powder. It can then be standardised to a marker compound or supplied as a ratio extract, such as 10:1, and any carrier used, such as maltodextrin, is stated on the specification.

Tips for Buyers and Formulators

Silymarin content measured by UV is always higher than silybin content measured by HPLC, so compare products using the same method.

Silymarin does not dissolve well in water; for better formulation performance, ask about phospholipid or other enhanced grades.

Silymarin is usually taken at 140 mg to 420 mg a day in finished products, split into two or three servings. The extract is yellow to brown and can colour tablet coatings, so check the look of your product early. Store it sealed and away from light and moisture.
