Indigofera Tinctoria Extract
Part of our Herbal Extracts range, manufactured and exported by Arizone International LLP.
Indigofera Tinctoria Extract comes from true indigo, the plant that gave the world its most famous blue dye. In India it is called Neel or Nili. Today its leaves are best known in natural hair care, where indigo is used with henna to create brown and black shades without synthetic dyes.
Arizone International manufactures, supplies and exports Indigofera Tinctoria leaf powder and extract from India to hair-care, cosmetic and Ayurvedic manufacturers, as well as natural dye buyers.
A Plant That Shaped History
India was the main source of indigo dye for the ancient world. The word "indigo" itself comes from the Greek "indikon", meaning something from India. During British rule, farmers in Bengal and Bihar were forced to grow indigo under unfair contracts. This led to the Indigo Revolt of 1859 and, later, to the Champaran Satyagraha of 1917, Mahatma Gandhi's first major campaign in India. Synthetic indigo later replaced most natural production, but interest in the plant has returned with the demand for natural products.
How Indigo Works
Fresh indigo leaves are green. They contain indican, a colourless compound. When the leaves are crushed and mixed with water, indican breaks down and, on contact with air, turns into indigotin, the blue pigment. This is why indigo paste is mixed just before use and why the colour develops over several hours after application.

Growing Regions and Quality
Indigofera tinctoria is grown in Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh, with smaller cultivation in other states. Leaves are harvested before flowering, when indican content is highest, and dried quickly in shade to protect the colour. Poorly dried leaves give weak colour, so good processing matters as much as the plant itself.
We check indigo powder for colour strength by trial dyeing, along with particle size, moisture, sand and ash content, heavy metals and microbial counts. For hair colour use, the powder should be finely sifted so it mixes into a smooth paste.
Storage
Indigo leaf powder loses strength when exposed to humidity and light. Keep it in sealed, moisture-proof packaging and store in a cool, dry place. Use within the recommended shelf life for best colour.
