Grape Seed Extract is made from the small, hard seeds of Vitis vinifera grapes. Those seeds are left over after grapes are pressed for juice or wine, and they turn out to be one of the richest natural sources of proanthocyanidins, a group of polyphenols with a strong antioxidant profile.
Arizone International manufactures, supplies and exports Grape Seed Extract from India, standardised to OPC and polyphenol content for supplement, food and cosmetic manufacturers.
From Winery By-Product to Ingredient
Grape seeds were once treated as waste. That changed in the mid-twentieth century when French researcher Jacques Masquelier studied oligomeric proanthocyanidins, or OPCs, first from pine bark and later from grape seeds. Grape seed extract soon became one of the best known antioxidant supplements in Europe and then worldwide.
In India, Nashik in Maharashtra is known as the grape capital of the country and is also home to many wineries. Seeds from grape processing in Maharashtra and Karnataka provide raw material for extraction.
What Grape Seed Extract Contains
- Oligomeric Proanthocyanidins (OPCs)Chains of catechin and epicatechin units. These are the main reason people buy grape seed extract.
- Catechins and EpicatechinsSimple flavan-3-ols also found in green tea.
- Gallic AcidA phenolic acid present in smaller amounts.
- Deep Red-Brown ColourThe powder is naturally reddish-brown and has an astringent, slightly bitter taste.
Grades Available
- OPC 95% (by UV), the most common grade for supplements
- Proanthocyanidins 80% to 95% by specified test methods
- Polyphenols 90% to 95%
- Water-soluble grades for beverages
- Custom specifications on request
Please note that results depend on the test method. UV, HPLC and other assays can give very different numbers for the same extract, so the method should always be agreed along with the percentage.
Applications
- Antioxidant capsules and tablets
- Heart and circulation wellness formulas
- Skin and beauty supplements, often with collagen or vitamin C
- Eye-care blends
- Anti-ageing serums, creams and sunscreens

Quality and Storage
We test each lot for OPC or polyphenol content, moisture, solubility, heavy metals and microbial counts, and share a certificate of analysis. Grape seed extract is sensitive to moisture and light. It should be kept in sealed, opaque packaging in a cool, dry place.
A Note for Formulators
Grape seed extract may have mild blood-thinning effects in high doses. Brands should advise consumers on blood-thinning medicines to consult a healthcare professional before use.
Tips for Buyers and Formulators
Grape seed extract is usually standardised to OPCs, commonly 95%, so ask for the test method on the COA. It is often combined with pine bark or vitamin C in skin and circulation formulas.
