Blueberry Extract is a concentrated, deep purple powder made from the fruit of blueberries, mainly Vaccinium corymbosum (highbush) and Vaccinium angustifolium (wild lowbush). It is rich in anthocyanins, the natural pigments that give blueberries their colour, and it is used in antioxidant, eye health and brain wellness supplements, functional foods and cosmetics.
Arizone International supplies Blueberry Extract in standardised grades to supplement brands, food and beverage companies, cosmetic manufacturers and private label businesses.
About Blueberries
Blueberries are native to North America, and the United States and Canada remain the largest producers, followed by Peru, Chile and several European countries. Wild blueberries, which grow in Maine and eastern Canada, are smaller and have a higher concentration of anthocyanins than cultivated berries. Blueberries are closely related to bilberries (Vaccinium myrtillus), but bilberries have darker flesh and are used for separate extracts.
How Blueberry Extract Is Made
Ripe berries or berry pomace are extracted with water or water-ethanol, often slightly acidified to protect the anthocyanins. The extract is purified, concentrated and spray dried into a fine, dark purple powder with a sweet-tart taste. The colour and anthocyanin content depend on the berry source and processing.

Quality and Authenticity
Because anthocyanin extracts are valuable, low-grade products may be adulterated with cheaper purple extracts or synthetic dyes. We supply Blueberry Extract with HPLC fingerprinting to confirm its anthocyanin profile.
Quality Parameters
- Species identity (Vaccinium corymbosum or V. angustifolium)
- Anthocyanin content and HPLC profile
- Loss on drying, ash and solubility
- Residual solvents, microbiological limits and heavy metals
- Pesticide residues
Packaging and Storage
Blueberry Extract is supplied in 25 kg fibre drums with double food-grade liners, or in 1 kg and 5 kg aluminium foil bags. Anthocyanins are sensitive to light, heat and moisture, so store it cool, dry and dark in tightly closed packs.
Tips for Buyers and Formulators
Ask for anthocyanin content by HPLC, as UV methods can overstate it.
