Black Pepper Extract is a concentrated form of Piper nigrum, the spice that once made the Malabar Coast of Kerala one of the busiest trading regions in the world. Today the extract is best known for piperine, the compound that gives pepper its bite and that formulators add to supplements to help other nutrients absorb better.
Arizone International manufactures and exports Black Pepper Extract from India, supplying piperine-standardised grades to nutraceutical, food and pharmaceutical companies.
From Peppercorn to Extract
Black pepper is the dried, unripe fruit of a climbing vine. The green berries are picked, left to ferment briefly and sun-dried until the skin turns black and wrinkled. For extraction, the dried peppercorns are ground and treated with a suitable solvent to pull out piperine and related alkaloids. The extract is then purified, dried and milled.
Whole peppercorns usually contain around 5% to 9% piperine. After extraction and purification, that figure can be raised to 95% or more.
Why Formulators Use Piperine
Piperine is widely researched as a bioavailability enhancer. A well-known human study from 1998 found that adding a small amount of piperine to curcumin raised curcumin levels in the blood many times over. Since then, turmeric and black pepper have become one of the most common pairings on supplement shelves.
Piperine is also added to formulas with CoQ10, resveratrol, beta-carotene, selenium and several herbal extracts. It is used in very small doses, often 5 mg to 20 mg per serving, so a little extract goes a long way.

- Black Pepper OleoresinA thick, dark liquid with both flavour and pungency, used mainly in food processing.
- Ratio ExtractsSuch as 10:1 or 20:1, for traditional and full-spectrum formulations.
Applications

- Ayurvedic preparations such as Trikatu, which combines black pepper, long pepper and ginger
- Weight-management and metabolism blends

Handling and Storage
Piperine is sensitive to light and can slowly change into less pungent forms when exposed to it for long periods. Keep the powder in sealed, light-proof packaging in a cool, dry store. The powder is pungent and can irritate the nose and eyes, so workers should use masks and gloves during blending.
Tips for Buyers and Formulators
Piperine is often added at small doses to improve absorption of curcumin and other ingredients. Ask for piperine content by HPLC.
