Berberis Aristata Extract
Part of our Herbal Extracts range, manufactured and exported by Arizone International LLP.
Berberis Aristata Extract is made from the Indian barberry, a spiny Himalayan shrub known in Ayurveda as Daruharidra. It is one of the richest natural sources of berberine in India and has been part of traditional Indian herbal practice for well over two thousand years.
Arizone International manufactures, supplies and exports Berberis Aristata Extract for Ayurvedic companies, nutraceutical brands and cosmetic manufacturers worldwide.
The Plant Behind the Extract
Berberis aristata grows wild on rocky slopes of the Himalayas, from Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand to Nepal, usually between 1,800 and 3,000 metres. Local names include Daruhaldi, Chitra and Indian tree turmeric. The shrub carries yellow flowers in spring and small bluish-black berries in summer.
The stem and root are cut, dried and processed. Once the bark is scraped, the wood underneath is a clear, deep yellow, which explains why the plant is often compared to turmeric even though the two are unrelated.
Rasanjana: A Traditional Preparation
One of the best known Ayurvedic preparations from this plant is Rasanjana, also called Rasaut. It is made by boiling the stem or root in water, straining it and slowly reducing the liquid to a thick, dark solid. Classical texts such as the Charaka Samhita and Sushruta Samhita describe its use, especially for the eyes and skin. A modern Berberis Aristata Extract follows a similar idea but is dried into a fine, standardised powder that is easier to handle in factories.

Sustainable Sourcing
Because the plant is mostly collected from the wild, overharvesting is a real concern in parts of the Himalayas. We work with suppliers who follow responsible collection practices and we support traceability for each batch. Buyers who need documentation on origin can request it along with the certificate of analysis.
Tips for Buyers and Formulators
Berberine extracts should state the berberine percentage by HPLC. Berberine can interact with some medicines, so labels should advise people on medication to consult their doctor. Store the extract sealed and away from light.
