Arbutin Extract is a skin care ingredient used widely in brightening and even-tone cosmetics. Natural arbutin comes from the leaves of bearberry and related plants, and purified arbutin has become one of the most popular active ingredients in serums, creams and masks across Asia, Europe and the Middle East.
Arizone International supplies Arbutin Extract for nutraceutical, herbal, cosmetic and food manufacturers, private label brands, wholesalers and bulk buyers. Standardisation, extract ratio, carrier, packaging and quantity can all be set to your specification.
Arbutin is a natural glycoside of hydroquinone found in the leaves of bearberry (Arctostaphylos uva-ursi), as well as in cranberry, blueberry and pear leaves. Beta-arbutin is the form found in plants. Alpha-arbutin is a closely related form made by enzymatic processes, and it is often chosen for its higher stability and effectiveness at lower levels.
In cosmetics, arbutin is used because it slows the activity of tyrosinase, an enzyme involved in melanin production. It is supplied as a white crystalline powder with high purity, usually 98% or more.
To make the extract, the dried plant material is cleaned, milled and extracted with water, hydro-alcohol or another suitable solvent. The liquid extract is filtered, concentrated and usually spray-dried into a fine, free-flowing powder. It can then be standardised to a marker compound or supplied as a ratio extract, such as 10:1, and any carrier used, such as maltodextrin, is stated on the specification.
Formulation, dosage, safety assessment, labelling and permitted claims of the finished product must comply with the regulations of the intended market. In the EU, the SCCS considers alpha-arbutin safe at up to 2% in face creams and 0.5% in body lotions, and beta-arbutin at up to 7% in face creams, with hydroquinone kept as low as possible; other markets have their own limits.
Always ask for the free hydroquinone content on the certificate of analysis, as it is restricted in cosmetics.
Arbutin can break down in very acidic or hot conditions, so keep formulas at a mild pH and add it during the cool-down phase.
