Andrographis Paniculata Extract is made from Kalmegh, a very bitter herb known in India as the "king of bitters". It is one of the most researched herbs in Ayurveda and traditional Asian practice, and its extract is widely used in immune, seasonal and liver wellness products.
Arizone International supplies Andrographis Paniculata Extract for nutraceutical, herbal, cosmetic and food manufacturers, private label brands, wholesalers and bulk buyers. Standardisation, extract ratio, carrier, packaging and quantity can all be set to your specification.
Andrographis paniculata is an annual herb that grows across India, Sri Lanka and South-East Asia. The leaves and stems, known together as the aerial parts, contain diterpene lactones called andrographolides, which are responsible for its intense bitter taste and are used to standardise the extract.
In Ayurveda, Kalmegh is traditionally used for digestive and liver wellness, and in Scandinavian and Asian markets it is a popular ingredient in seasonal wellness products. Common extract grades are standardised to 10%, 20% or 30% andrographolides.
To make the extract, the dried plant material is cleaned, milled and extracted with water, hydro-alcohol or another suitable solvent. The liquid extract is filtered, concentrated and usually spray-dried into a fine, free-flowing powder. It can then be standardised to a marker compound or supplied as a ratio extract, such as 10:1, and any carrier used, such as maltodextrin, is stated on the specification.
Formulation, dosage, safety assessment, labelling and permitted claims of the finished product must comply with the regulations of the intended market. Andrographis is not recommended during pregnancy or breastfeeding, may interact with blood pressure and blood-thinning medicines, and rare allergic reactions have been reported, so labels should advise medical advice for these groups.
Always ask for andrographolides measured by HPLC rather than UV, as UV methods can over-state the content.
The extract is extremely bitter, so coated tablets or capsules are the best formats for consumer products.
For tablets, ask for a granulated or free-flowing grade, as fine andrographis powder can stick to punches. A 20% andrographolide grade is a common middle choice, giving a reasonable dose without the higher cost of the 30% grade. Store the extract cool and dry.
